The Top Three 🏆

The industry’s most important stories today.

🥇 WHAT GOOGLE’S U-TURN MEANS FOR MARKETERS

Google’s U-turn on fingerprinting, effective next month, opens up new opportunities for ad targeting. While advertisers welcomed the update, experts told AdExchanger marketers should proceed with caution. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has called Google’s move “irresponsible,” warning businesses that they don’t have free rein to use fingerprinting. more

But can fingerprinting really be deployed "lawfully and transparently"?

  • Cillian Kieran, CEO of privacy startup Ethyca, says theoretically it’s possible, but practically, it’s nearly impossible. A big issue with fingerprinting from a privacy perspective is that there’s no way for users to know it’s happening, let alone opt out.

  • Arielle Garcia of Check My Ads argues that fingerprinting is just a way to sidestep transparency and informed consent. If users are okay with being tracked, fingerprinting becomes irrelevant.

🥈 “RED NOTE” UPRISING

With just six days until a potential TikTok ban, users are fleeing to Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media app that literally means “little red book” in Mandarin. Newcomers, calling it "Red Note" or "the Chinese Instagram," are using translation tools to navigate its predominantly Chinese platform as they settle in as "TikTok refugees." more

  • It’s now the top-downloaded app in the U.S. App Store.

  • Xiaohongshu is known in China as a platform for travel and lifestyle content and has 300M+ users.

  • December was a whirlwind: The November 2024 core update wrapped up, then the December 2024 core update and spam update hit right after.

Pixelfed, an open-source image-sharing platform, has seen a surge in signups amid Meta's controversial rule changes. more

  • Meanwhile, Mastodon is taking steps to decentralize further by creating a new nonprofit organization in Europe, and handing over control of key platform components to avoid one-person dominance. The company is trying to differentiate itself from CEO-controlled social networks like those of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. more
